Sulawesi #2 - A Story of a Poso Conflict Survivor / Kisah Seorang Yang Selamat dari Konflik Poso

In December 2004, Santoso, a pastor of a church in Poso, was attacked by militants. As John Wilson found out, this incident has only increased his desire to share the love of God with the people of Indonesia.

INDONESIA: Bold Witness for Christ
The Video report [dan Terjemahan Indonesia] is after this article (ada di akhir artikel ini)

On the evening of 23 December 2004, after a worship service at the church, Santoso and his wife went to spend the night at his parents' house. He decided it wasn't safe to stay overnight in the church. "The following morning as I was praying with my wife, I didn't feel afraid. Instead I was filled with peace unlike anything I had ever felt before. "Later that morning, Santoso borrowed a friend's motorbike because he wanted to return to the church. After completing his work he asked if someone from the congregation would follow him back to his parents' house. They were only one kilometre from the church when some men came out of the bushes. "At that moment, I didn't feel afraid at all even though I saw one of them holding a machete. I thought he was a nice guy who just worked with his machete at the plantation nearby," Santoso said.

In the past when travelling alone, he had always felt fear, but because God had given him peace that morning as he prayed, he was not afraid. "I kept going and when I was about three or four metres from him, I smiled and beeped the horn of my bike as a sign of greeting.

Then the man turned and swung his machete, aiming for my neck!" Santoso quickly ducked down, but the blade struck him across the mouth. He kept riding for several metres and then fell off his motorbike. Two men started chasing after him, while another two attacked Santoso's friend who had been following him. His friend managed to break free and ran to get help. Santoso struggled to follow, holding his jaw as he ran and trying to stop the bleeding. As the two men chased him, Santoso cried out, "God help me!"

As he prayed with every step, he felt a power come over him and he seemed to become stronger and was able to run faster. "Amazingly, while I ran, I didn't feel any pain from my wound at all," Santoso said. "I didn't feel dizzy although I was bleeding profusely. I kept running until I reached the village, about a kilometre away. I saw a man and asked for help. He happened to be a pastor." The pastor wept as he prayed for Santoso. The villagers put Santoso into a van and took him to the hospital, about 20 kilometres away. Santoso was in hospital for two weeks. His mouth and tongue were cut and he lost 10 of his teeth, severely limiting his speech and ability to preach. The police made no effort to apprehend Santoso's assailants.

In 2005, Santoso's condition came to the attention of VOMedical who have since completed reconstructive surgery on his jaw and teeth. Thanks to VOMedical, Pastor Santoso's teeth were replaced and he continues to preach the Gospel. Santoso said he is very thankful to the Lord for VOMedical coming and meeting his needs. He never thought that people from overseas cared so much about the believers in Indonesia and the persecution they face.

Santoso did not hesitate to forgive his attackers. "God has put vision in my heart to serve Him more than ever before and I want to win many souls for Christ. God has put peace and joy in my heart and as His servant; I want to put into practise God's love to those who don't know Christ. They think that we are their enemies, so I want to show Christ's love to them."

Voice of the Martyrs Australia met with Santoso a few months ago and enquired about his recovery and ongoing ministry. He currently shares Christ with the Wana tribe, a primitive culture that still sleeps in trees, trades wood for food and is nomadic. Through Santoso's efforts, this tribe now has Bibles and the Gospel Storybook, 'He Lived Among Us.' He baptised 10 new believers recently and says their faith continues to grow with each visit. While Santoso is away, his wife ministers to the believers in their home church. When a church reaches 20 believers, Santoso moves on and plants a church in another village. We asked Santoso if he is afraid after all that has happened. "Even though I am still being threatened, I am not afraid. I bear testimony to the power of God over my life." "And what sustains you as you continue in this work?" He replied, "I know that the Lord helps me and I am thankful that the Lord still uses me as His tool." Santoso has an unwavering faith and the Lord has now added three additional workers to his team.
